The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (“Board” or “BPU”) is the State agency which bears a statutory mandate to ensure the provision of safe, adequate and proper utility and other essential services at reasonable rates to customers in New Jersey. Pursuant to various State laws, the BPU regulates important services such as electricity, water, natural gas, telecommunications and cable television.
In addition to its traditional role as regulator regarding such essential services, the Board has also embarked upon emerging areas of energy reform, deregulation of energy and telecommunications services and the restructuring of utility rates in an effort to encourage conservation and competitive pricing.
In addition, the BPU has authority to monitor utility and other regulated services and to respond to consumer complaints.
