Scarinci Hollenbeck Partner John M. Scagnelli will serve as a panelist at the New Jersey State Bar Association Annual Meeting on May 14, 2026, joining a distinguished group of legal practitioners and risk management professionals to address AI legal malpractice risks and the practical challenges of deploying artificial intelligence within law firms.
As law firms move beyond drafting AI use policies, the focus is now shifting to implementation — and the liability exposure that follows when AI tools are used without proper guardrails. This session picks up where foundational AI policy discussions leave off, diving into the practical realities of integrating AI into daily legal workflows.
The panel will examine how attorneys can responsibly embed AI into their practices while maintaining ethical compliance, including proper attribution and citation standards. Panelists will also address malpractice risks, insurance implications, and offer a judicial perspective on how AI is currently being used in criminal prosecution and defense. Attendees can expect real-world insights drawn from both successful implementations and cautionary examples of AI legal malpractice risks in practice.
The program will be moderated by Kathleen J. Devlin of Weber Gallagher and will feature the following panelists:
John M. Scagnelli is a Partner at Scarinci Hollenbeck whose practice encompasses environmental law, litigation, land use, and environmental remediation. He has served as environmental counsel to banks, municipalities, public authorities, and commercial and industrial organizations, and brings extensive experience in environmental compliance, liability, and risk management.
His participation in this NJSBA program reflects the firm’s engagement with the evolving legal and professional responsibility questions surrounding artificial intelligence in legal practice.
