According to Chambers & Partners, more than 140 researchers work full time to investigate which lawyers and firms are suitable for recommendation. Chambers states that “individual lawyers are ranked on the basis of their legal knowledge and experience, their ability, their effectiveness, and their client-service.” The selection process at Chambers is multi-tiered. To begin, researchers conduct interviews with clients who are active in the legal field. These clients can be law firms or other lawyers. Then researchers assess the recent work done by prospective attorneys and firms. Finally, Chambers holds internal meetings to scrutinize the research used to compile and approve the ranking tables.

The Chambers Guides have been ranking the best lawyers and law firms since 1990, and now covers over 180 jurisdictions throughout the world, with heir slogan being, “Your Guide to the World’s Best Lawyers.” They rank both lawyers and law firms based on the research of editors and researchers. They determine their rankings by speaking directly to lawyers and clients where they conduct intensive telephone interviews.  Chambers also uses information that is submitted directly from law firms. However, Chambers asserts their most credible source of information is their in-depth face-to-face and telephone interviews.

International In-house Counsel, an independent journal, conducted a survey of over 20,000 in-house attorneys from around the world and found that more than half of all law firms prefer to use Chambers as their go-to directory to identify law firms and individuals.
