The Insurance Accounting & Systems Association (IASA) invited Scarinci Hollenbeck Partner Fernando Pinguelo, to speak on a panel addressing cyber security and data privacy issues facing the insurance industry at the 2014 IASA Annual Educational Conference and Business Show in Indianapolis, June 8-11, 2014. Hundreds of insurance-related employees, owners, and entrepreneurs gathered to discuss the latest issues that confront the industry. IASA is a non-profit education association that strives to enhance the knowledge of insurance professionals and participants from similar organizations closely allied with the insurance business. The IASA is one of the insurance industry’s largest and most respected trade associations. IASA’s main goal is to enhance the knowledge of insurance professionals through the exchange of ideas and information.

One of the highlights of this yearly event was the keynote address, which was delivered by Former President Bill Clinton. President Clinton has been vocal about his cyber security stance during and after his presidency. For example, the President created the first national strategy to prepare the United States to defend cyber threats. He has advocated for strengthening cyber security through public-private partnerships and that private entities should create an information-sharing mechanism to better respond to cyber-attacks.

At this year’s conference, one of its “Super Sessions” was focused on emerging issues in technology and cyber security liability. Three panelists discussed how these issues will affect computer and software systems in the insurance industry and the lessons and knowledge they imparted can be applied to many other tech-savvy trades. Fernando Pinguelo, Chair of Cyber Security & Data Protection group at Scarinci Hollenbeck, was one of the panelists who spoke about issues of privacy, security of data, potential incursions into back-end systems and the growing threat posed by hackers looking to breach any insurer’s cyber security or that of their policy holders.  These issues are a concern not only for businesses that utilize computers as a part of their day to day operations, but to private citizens as well.
