The Firm
201-896-4100 info@sh-law.comNew York, NY, September 11, 2014 –Anthony R. Caruso, Esq., partner and chair of the Sports, Media & Entertainment Law Group of Scarinci Hollenbeck LLC, was featured in a recent article by David Lariviere for Forbes, titled, “Is It Fair If Suspension Results In End Of Ray Rice’s NFL Career?“. In it, they discussed the controversy surrounding the Ray Rice domestic abuse case, likely penalties on and off the field and the respective roles of the NFL and federal courts in this case.
The case surrounding Rice attracted significant public attention after it came out that the NFL initially suspended the player for only two games. Not long after this, a video emerged of Rice attempting to pull his apparently unconscious wife out of a hotel elevator. Rice is expected to receive a suspension for at least two seasons. The article speculates as to whether any NFL teams would be interested in signing the running back if he is reinstated after an extended absence from the NFL. Caruso noted that he believed Rice deserves the punishment and that the NFL and the Ravens had no choice but to distance themselves from the player.
“[NFL Commissioner Roger] Goodell’s on the chopping block. At least he admitted he made a mistake but the NFL really blew this one,” Caruso said. “I think it will be at least two seasons, but I think Goodell will take extra time on making this announcement, maybe close to the playoffs.”
Drawing from his experience in sports and entertainment law, Caruso said that the state of New Jersey is treating Rice as a first-time offender. This permitted him to enter a pre-trial intervention program and will “likely avoid jail time.”
