Annual New Jersey Environmental Leadership Awards Announced

Little Falls, NJ – April 25, 2023 – The Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ) honored Partner Theodore A. Schwartz with the “Outstanding Dedication as a Steward of the Environment” award as part of the CIANJ’s annual Environmental Leadership awards ceremony held at the Highlawn in West Orange, NJ last Friday. Mr. Schwartz was recognized for his numerous contributions to environmental law over the course of his nearly 60-year legal career.

“I am honored by CIANJ’s recognition for the decades of hard work I have dedicated to the state of New Jersey,” stated Mr. Schwartz. “It has been a privilege to help revitalize landscapes across the state and play a role in the development of laws and organizations that help manage the environment here.”

Early in his career, Mr. Schwartz led the Attorney General’s Pollution Task Force from 1966-1970 and spearheaded the creation of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), authoring numerous environmental laws and regulations, including the New Jersey Air Pollution Control Act which became a national model for environmental regulation.  He was also a legal advisor to many state and federal agencies on environmental regulatory matters. President Carter appointed him as a Commissioner to the National Alcohol Fuels Commission, where he analyzed the development of alternative fuel sources. In 2016, the New Jersey Law Journal honored Ted with the Lifetime Achievement award.

“I want to congratulate all our winners for the important work that they do. CIANJ would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the part these companies play in keeping New Jersey a safe, beautiful, and clean place to live, work, and conduct business,” stated CIANJ President, Anthony Russo. “We look forward to hosting this awards ceremony every year to honor our members who are making a real environmental difference”.

In honor of Earth Day, CIANJ in connection with COMMERCE Magazine recognized the environmental good works of companies across the state with a breakfast awards celebration on Friday, April 21st. CIANJ wanted to celebrate the achievement, stewardship, and leadership of its members to show appreciation for the work they do to preserve the environment. All recipients of CIANJ awards are published in this month’s issue of COMMERCE Magazine linked below.
