201-896-4100 info@sh-law.comEach year, NFL hopefuls power through a series of evaluations chosen to test their mettle, intelligence and talent ahead of the league’s annual draft. What those tests look like, however, could soon change.
National Football Scouting Inc., the organization that runs the NFL Scouting Combine, has put together a committee developed to mull changes to the series of tests designed to measure potential for future success in the league. The committee will be composed of league executives, coaches, scouts, team physicians and athletic trainers. This group will review each phase of the annual event to determine whether any of the tests administered each year may no longer be effective for evaluating college talent.
For NFL hopefuls, this means keeping an eye on the progress of the meetings and tailoring training to the outcome. If and when the combine is changed to better reflect evolving technology and sports science, college athletes should be prepared to succeed within the confines of the new tests. While the process seems to be in its early stages, observers can expect oft-criticized aspects of the combine such as the 40-yard dash and the bench press to be on the chopping block, potentially.
Football players work hard to ensure success at the annual event, and much of that preparation is tailored specifically to the tests they face at the combine. If the event is restructured, then past training regimes won’t be as effective. Training programs should be custom-made to fit each of the tests at the combine, so that players can maximize results.
This is something college players, sports agents and coaches should all keep an eye on over the course of the year leading up to the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine. As the event changes, so should the preparation that goes into it – that will give players the best chance to perform well and catch scouts’ attention.
