International Cyber Attorney to Speak at ABA Brazil Conference

Scarinci Hollenbeck Partner Fernando Pinguelo to Join Esteemed Panel at the New Perspectives for Latin America Conference in São Paulo, Brazil

Lyndhurst, NJ, August 23, 2013 – Fernando M. Pinguelo, a Partner at Scarinci Hollenbeck Attorneys at Law, and Chair of the law firm’s Cyber Security & Data Protection practice group, will join a panel on “the Strategic Outlook for Major International Sporting Events,” at the upcoming New Perspectives for Latin America Conference in São Paulo, Brazil. This program is part of the American Bar Association Section of International Law’s conference, “New Perspectives for infrastructure Projects in Latin America,” which will be held on August 23‐24, 2013, at Pullman São Paulo Ibirapuera, São Paulo, Brazil.

Pinguelo was invited by program chair Renato Opice Blum, of Opice Blum, Bruno, Abrusio e Vainzof in São Paulo, to provide the United States’ perspective to the program.

For the first time in many years, the American Bar Association Section of International Law comes to Brazil for a two-day conference. The conference brings together members of the global legal community for informative programs regarding infrastructure projects in the region. Opice Blum will lead a panel composed of Pinguelo, program moderator Marcio Costa (Menezes e Gonçalves, Siqueira Castro Advogados – São Paulo), and panelists Marcelo Bombau (M.M. Bomchil – Buenos Aires), Sílvia Regina B. Melchior (Melchior, Micheletti e Amendoeira Advogados – São Paulo), and Dr. Albert Keyack, American Consulate (USPTO), Rio de Janeiro.

The panel will discuss how computer scams, malware campaigns, and cyber-attacks that plagued events such as the Olympics in London and Beijing will impact future large scale sporting events, including the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, both of which will be held in Brazil. The panel will also address how event organizers and Brazilian officials must anticipate cyber threats and begin testing their cyber-security status by running “technical rehearsals.”

“This is a remarkable opportunity to share our experiences and insights on common elements of cyber security,” said Pinguelo. “With all eyes set to focus on Brazil in 2014 and 2016, as it takes center stage for these world-class events, Brazil’s preparation and foresight will become the hallmarks of a successful presentation. I look forward to working with event organizers as they address cyber threats in a meaningful way.”

Besides chairing its Cyber Security & Data Protection practice group, Pinguelo is also co-Chair of Scarinci Hollenbeck’s Crisis and Risk Management Group. He has extensive experience as a trial attorney and has garnered a national and international reputation as one of the pioneers of the emerging practices of cyber law and electronic discovery (eDiscovery). Several local, national, and international syndications have bestowed awards on, or otherwise profiled, Pinguelo for his work, including Law Technology News, which identified him as one of the few U.S.-based attorneys with advanced experience in managing privacy and security issues.

Recently, Pinguelo addressed the Brazilian Escola Paulista da Magistratura and provided the São Paulo state court judiciary with an executive summary on U.S. President Barack Obama’s February 12, 2013, Executive Order on Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity.
