201-896-4100 info@sh-law.comFormer football star O.J. Simpson is facing a slew of legal issues and the latest involves a hefty tax debt owed to the Internal Revenue Service.
Simpson, who is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence in Nevada’s Lovelock Correctional Center after a 2008 conviction involving kidnapping and armed robbery, has reportedly skipped out on paying more than half a million dollars in taxes. The IRS filed a lien for $179,435.07 for the years of 2007 to 2010, and the State of California says Simpson still owes $318,566.04 for the year 2000. Another federal lien filed by the IRS in December 2012 details an additional tax debt of $17,015.99 in taxes for the year 2011, and marks the third tax lien filed against Simpson in the past 12 months. Overall, Simpson owes $515,017.10 in taxes.
Imprisonment does not absolve Americans of their tax law obligations, and the IRS will continue to seek the unpaid amounts from Simpson. In addition to his tax woes, Simpson is also on the hook for millions of dollars owed to the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman related to a civil lawsuit they won after the former star was acquitted of the double murder. The 1997 civil court judgment against Simpson ordered him to pay the families of those victims $33.5 million.
As Simpson is already serving a prison sentence – nine years of which he is ineligible for parole – and owes millions of dollars to the families of his slain ex-wife and her friend, it is uncertain how effective the IRS liens will be in recouping these tax debts. Simpson is far from the first celebrity to face punishment from the IRS for unpaid taxes. A number of other high-profile stars, such as Lauryn Hill, have also faced prosecution for failing to meet their tax obligations.
