Former Hockey Player Joins Class-Action Lawsuit Against NCAA

NCAA Facing Class-Action Lawsuit

Kyle Solomon, former hockey player for the University of Maine, has joined three other athletes in a class-action lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association for the way the organization handles concussions.

Solomon – whose hockey career was halted his sophomore year due to a concussion – joined former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington, University of Central Arkansas football player Derek Owens and Ouachita Baptist University soccer player Angela Palacios in the suit, which was originally filed in 2011, according to Maine newspaper Bangor Daily News. The class-action lawsuit alleges “negligence and inaction with respect to concussions and concussion-related maladies,” on the part of the NCAA, the newspaper reports.

“People in their 20s shouldn’t be graduating from college with migraines that won’t go away,” Solomon told the newspaper.

Solomon experienced four concussions during his college hockey career, and alleges that he not given sufficient information or treated properly after reporting the incidents. He was forced to stop playing hockey after a neurologist told him that another concussion might end his life, the newspaper said.

The suit seeks both compensatory damages and additional provisions in sports law that govern treatment, detection and screenings for head injuries. In addition, the suit is also urging the NCAA to create a trust to cover the costs of monitoring medical conditions of NCAA players.
